Inaugural Fellow of the Bourns College of Engineering Winston Chung received the 2011 Award for Corporate Social Responsibility at the 2011 South-South Awards in New York City September 19, 2011.

Chung was also a featured panelist at a discussion at the China Center during Climate Week NYC September 19-26, 2011, and is scheduled to visit key U.S. public policy leaders on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

Climate Week NYC is an annual summit focused on driving a "clean industrial revolution" by bringing together the world's leading businesses, governments, and opinion and thought leaders to call for urgent action against climate change. During Climate Week, the China Center will host a luncheon and the panel discussion on "Low Carbon Opportunities in China," bringing together business and government leaders from China and the U.S. to explore possible carbon reduction solutions and collaborations.

In January 2011, he gave to $10 million to the Bourns College of Engineering to establish the Winston Chung Global Energy Center and the Winston Chung Endowed Professorships in Energy Innovation and Sustainability.

The United States and China are two of the world's largest greenhouse gas-emitting countries. "It is important that we work together to meet the challenge of reducing pollution caused by our collective industrial might while meeting the increasing demand for energy by our factories and our people as we try to improve the lives of our citizens in the 21st century," stated Chung.

"My battery is unique in its ability to provide large quantities of stable power, over long periods of time, without deterioration of the quality or quantity of the power over the life of the battery, " explains Chung. "No other battery in existence performs as well nor can any other battery meet the need for power storage in the 21st century. It is the only workable solution for power storage needed in mobile off-grid applications and stationary on-grid applications. It is a technology that has a growing global impact."

The South-South Awards Ceremony is organized by the International Telecommunication Union, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and South-South News, and is supported by the Permanent Missions of Antigua and Barbuda, Malawi, Dominica, Zambia, Tajikistan, El Salvador and Honduras to the United Nations. Awardees were selected based on an examination of their projects/initiatives/innovations' global or large-scale impact, scalability, sustainability and level of innovation.
